January 2007

In November, PAMF's Palo Alto Clinic expanded with the opening of its new three-story, 41,000-square-foot Clark Building, which is located on the same campus on El Camino Real. The facility is home to the Dermatology and Sports Medicine Departments, which relocated from the existing Jamplis and Lee buildings, and the Department of Physical Therapy -- a new service at PAMF.

"The Clark Building will allow us the space to offer new services and continue to provide our patients with the best possible care," said Francis Marzoni, M.D., president of PAMF's Palo Alto Division.

The Department of Physical Therapy is located on the first floor. Therapists offer treatment for and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and postoperative care. (Physical Therapy does not provide care for neurological disorders, such as stroke and spinal injuries, and injuries below the elbow, such as hands.) The department features state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment, including Pilates equipment, Olympic lifting platforms, a pool for aquatic therapy, an isokinetic testing device and two specialty treadmills that will alter the effects of normal gravity. The first floor also features a large conference area for health education, a room for shared medical appointments and a 3-tesla MRI machine.

The first floor lobby rises up to an atrium on the second floor, which is solely dedicated to the Department of Dermatology. The department provides care to patients with a wide variety of skin disorders, and features four procedure rooms; a large observation room with recliners and a TV for patients' comfort during longer procedures that may require monitoring; a dermatology lab; four surgical and laser procedure rooms; and a phototherapy room.

The Department of Sports Medicine, which provides care to athletes of all abilities, is located on the third floor. The department features advanced diagnostic and treatment technology, a cast room and an orthotics lab. Radiology services are also located on the third floor, featuring two imaging machines and an image-reading room.

The building is named after Silicon Graphics and Netscape founder James Clark, who presented PAMF with a $5 million leadership gift from the James H. Clark Charitable Foundation in 2003 -- one of the largest gifts in PAMF's history.
