FDA Consumer Alert: Some Weight Loss Products Contain Rx Ingredients
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is urging consumers not to purchase or consume more than 25 different weight loss products because they contain undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients that may be harmful.
The tainted weight loss products, which are marketed as "dietary supplements" and are promoted and sold on various Web sites and in some retail stores, are:

Although some of these products claim to be "natural" or contain only "herbal" ingredients, the FDA found that the undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients in some of these products include a controlled substance, a drug not approved for marketing in the United States, an anti-seizure medication, and a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer-causing agent.
Some of the amounts of active pharmaceutical ingredients far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels and may cause high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat), palpitations, heart attack or stroke. These pharmaceutical ingredients can also interact with other mediations that patients may be taking and increase their risk of medical problems or complications.
The FDA advises consumers who have used any of these products to stop taking them and consult their health care provider immediately. Visit the FDA’s Web site for more information about this warning and the weight loss products involved.
