An internal medicine doctor, often referred to as an "internist," is a physician who focuses on the care of adults (individuals over the age of 18). Internists focus at least three years of their medical training on preventing and treating adult diseases. An internal medicine doctor can solve both common and more complex health care cases. They treat adult patients in all areas of medicine, including:

  • Wellness -- disease prevention and promotion of health
  • Women's health
  • Substance abuse
  • Mental health
  • Treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, musculoskeletal, pulmonary, cardiac, gastrointestinal, neurologic and reproductive organs
  • Management of chronic illness, including multiple concurrent medical disease states
