At the Research Institute: improving mortality for South Asians
We apply clinical data to uncover patterns of disease in particular patient populations, customizing care for ethnic groups with a genetic predisposition for cancer, cardiovascular disease and other life-threatening conditions.
- Young South Asian men are three times likelier to die from coronary artery disease than non-Hispanic whites; preliminary studies have implicated low HDL (good cholesterol) in this dangerous disparity
- Genomic studies underway will help find and test drugs to prevent the disease among South Asians, who make up only 1 percent of the U.S. population, but 10 percent within the San Francisco Peninsula and one-third of the population worldwide
- Similar studies will search for genomic causes that may account for the higher incidence of colorectal cancer among South Asian patients—and earlier intervention to save lives
