Class Overview:

Single 3-hour session offered monthly, covering: causes and consequences of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, prevention of diabetes and heart disease, dietary and exercise guidelines.

  • Definition of Pre-diabetes
  • Prevention or delay of onset of type 2 diabetes
  • Benefits of weight loss of 5-10% of current body weight, if needed
  • Type, benefits and goals for exercise
  • Diabetic emergencies and sick-day management
  • Prediabetes- nutrition goals
    • starter diet provided
    • reduction/low saturated and trans fat
    • lean protein sources
    • portion control of carbohydrates
    • glycemic index of foods
    • label reading for calories, fat, saturated fat and carbohydrate
    • increasing/maintaining high fiber intake
