The medical team at the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) consists of talented plastic surgeons, physician assistants (PAs), registered nurses and patient service representatives (PSRs). Each team member plays an integral role in providing you with the highest quality care possible.

After graduating and receiving a degree from an accredited medical school, plastic surgeons commit five to seven years of internship and residency training. At least three of those years are committed to plastic surgery training to obtain hands-on experience in surgical techniques specific to repairing or reconstructing parts of the body.

Plastic surgery is separated into two fields: cosmetic surgery for non-medical reasons, and reconstructive surgery for restoration of the form and function of the body. While the focus and goals differ between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, plastic surgeons employ cosmetic surgical principles to optimize the end result of reconstructive procedures. Thus, many of the reconstructive surgeons at PAMF are also part of the cosmetic surgery team.

There are also several licensed physician assistants in the department who practice under the supervision of the surgeons. They assist in complex surgeries, perform minor surgical procedures and post-operative follow up.

Our nurses are primary points of contact for patients having surgery and help coordinate patient care. They are also a key source of emotional support, orienting you and your family to the department, answering questions and helping you manage your care.

PSRs are the first people who greet you when you arrive at the department. They check you in, schedule upcoming appointments and will direct your questions to the appropriate person.
