Question

When is the right time for me to have joint replacement surgery?

Answer

You may wish to consider joint replacement surgery when you have joint pain that prevents you from performing basic activities (such as walking, sitting or sleeping) and that cannot be relieved by nonsurgical alternatives. However, it is important to note that joint replacement is an elective surgery -- arthritis may be painful, but it is not life-threatening. While your surgeons can offer advice, you and your family should decide whether joint replacement is right for you. At the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), we encourage you to take time after your initial appointment to weigh the pros and cons.
